Originaria di Poppiano in Valdipesa, si disse anticamente dei Ficini, e solo nel XIV secolo prese il nome di Ridolfi allorquando Cione di Ridolfo venne insieme co'suoi fratelli a stabilirsi in Firense. Dal 1321 al 1530 dette alla patria 52 priori e 21 gonfalonieri di giustizia. Giovan-Francesco fu uno dei riformatori del governo dopo la caduta della repubblica, ed in premio fu fatto senatore; Lorenzo di Antonio, uno dei più grandi giuristi del suo tempo, ed autore di molte opere di giurisprudenza, fece parte del triumvirato che governò la repubblica fiorentina tra il XIV ed il XV secolo e sostenne innumerevoli ed importantissime ambascerie; Pietro di LUigi fu il capostipite di un ramo che nel 1648 fu fregiato del marchesato di Montescudajo e che mancò nel march.
