An ancient legend says that the family is descended from a brother of Queen Lupa. This blind young man was led in front of some prisoners that, according to a young visionary, gave off a special and mysterious light. The prisoners were located along the banks of the river Neira (Lugo). The infant miraculously regained his sight and saw a cross appear before his eyes. From this event the union of the words "ribeira" (= river bank) and "Neira", that, according to the legend, would have started the lineage and the coat of arms.
