Der Überlieferung nach ist die Familie R. ein Zweig der sehr edlen Colonna-Linie. Tatsächlich hätte es seinen Namen von einem Rizzotto oder Rizzetto Colonna erhalten, der im Jahr 1430 lebte. Auf jeden Fall ist der erste von ihr, von dem wir bestimmte Nachrichten haben, ein Giovanni, der 1675 in Trevigi als Sohn von Francesco R. geboren wurde und von Antonio Milani, einer vornehmen Dame aus Trevigi. Er absolvierte seine ersten Studien in Padua am Somaschi-Kolleg, widmete sich der reinen und gemischten Mathematik und kehrte nach Trevigi, wo er lebte, zurück.
