L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, al dir di molti genealogisti, andrebbe ricercata nel nome arabo libanese "Saev" o, al dir di altri, nel nome slavo "Sajev"; entrambi, comunque, corruzioni del nome ebraico "Isaiah", probabilmente, appartenuto ad un, oggi ignoto, capostipite. Tal casato, inoltre, in ogni epoca, sempre riuscì a distinguersi, grazie agli elevati personaggi, a cui diede i natali.
