Vuolsi che progenitore dei Scardona sia stato un tal Ramondo Folch, cugino di Re Luigi il Conquistatore, il quale fu uno dei dodici prodi Capitani che liberarono la Catalogna dai Mori. Per tale merito ebbe, infatti la terra di Cardona col titolo di Visconte ed i suoi discendenti presero, attraverso modificazioni dialettali di tal toponimo, il nome di Scardona. Questa famiglia passò in Sicilia col re Pietro d'Aragona nel 1282 e venne in Napoli con Alfonso I d'Aragona. Ha goduto nobiltà in Napoli ai Seggi di Nido e Porto, in Camerino, in Sicilia e nella Spagna. Fu ricevuta nell'Ordine di Malta nel 1524.
