L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, in ogni modo, andrebbe ricercata in una variazione, dovuta a fenomeni di fonetica dialettale e/o ad errori di tradizione manoscritta, del nome medioevale "Sigillus", portato, con larga probabilità, da un, oggi ignoto, capostipite. Il primo Sigillo di cui abbiam novella è un Cav. Giuliano, milite sotto i vessilli di Carlo I d'Angiò, distintosi, per maestria d'armi, nella celebre Battaglia di Benevento (1266).
