Er kleidete 1543 das Gewand der Ritter von Malta und besaß das Lehen von Acquasanta, Badalami, Barilo, Cartolari, Kastanien, Guardalame, Portadimare, Rincione, Risignuolo, Saline di Valdemone und Sollia, die Marquisate von Casale und S. Marino und das Fürstentum von Roccacolomba. Es wurde in zwei Zweige unterteilt: die Merlons und die Urinale. Es hatte den Titel eines Adligen durch Beschluss der Kommission über die Adelstitel vom 22. Januar und 10. April 1849. Die Familie ist in der italienischen offiziellen Adligenliste von 1922 mit dem Adelstitel (mf.) Allgemein eingetragen. Anderer Zweig. Ein deutscher Ritter des S., sagt Mugnos, brachte diese Adelsfamilie 1232 hervor; die in Messina von Senatoren rühmt.
