Nobile famiglia austriaca, di chiara ed avita virtù, la quale, secondo alcune ricostruzioni araldiche, sarebbe della stessa agnazione dei baroni di Thugut, la cui blasonatura è riportata nella pregevole opera, del genealogista ed araldista olandese J.B. Rietstap, "Armorial General". Secondo quanto ci viene tramandato, infatti il nome originario della famiglia era proprio Thunichtgut, o anche Thenitguet ma fu modificato da S.M. Maria Teresa in Thugut. Tuttavia, possiamo affermare che alcuni Thugut, diramando in Germania, si riappropriarono della originaria cognominizzazione mentre non subirono modifiche i Thunichtgut che già avevano diramato fuori dall'Austria. Il più celebre personaggio della famiglia, ed il primo a cognominarsi Thugut, fu Johann Amadeus Francis de Paula Freiherr Barone di Thugut (Linz, 8 marzo 1736 – Vienna, 29 maggio 1818), cancelliere dell'imperatore d'Austria, con il titolo di “Capo del Consiglio di Stato”, dal marzo 1793 al 1800.
