L'origine de ce patronyme, selon d'illustres généalogistes, doit être recherchée dans le nom germanique altéré "Druht", ou "Trutten", qui appartenait probablement à un géniteur aujourd'hui inconnu. Les premiers vestiges laissés par la famille se trouvent dès 1100, à Salerne, où vécut une Mme Trotta, qui semble avoir été la première femme médecin de l'histoire.
