De origen castellano, este ilustre apellido procede de la Merindad de Trasmiera (Arzobispado de Burgos). Don Juan V. de Ontanilla, II del nombre, Hijoldago notorio noble, Señor de su Casa y poseedor de la Casa y Torre del Linaje y solar de Cubillas, con sus haciendas y demás bienes vinculados, nació en la villa de Ajo, actualmente provincia de Santander y sirvió a Su Majestad en los Estados de Flandes con el grado de Alférez, distínguiéndose contra las fuerzas del Príncipe de Orange. Contrajo matrimonio con Doña María Fernández de Camino, hermana del Licenciado Don Pedro Camino, Inquisidor de Canarias, con la que fue progenitor de: Don Juan de V. de Ontanilla y Cubillas, III del nombre, primogénito de su Casa, Hijodalgo notorio y segundo de esta familia que se estableció en Canarias. El rimero fue su tío Juan Vélez de Guevara, Gobernador de las islas de Tenerife y La Palma desde el 15 de noviembre de 1565. Don Diego V. de Ontanilla y Cubillas, que acompañó a su hermano y se estableció en Santa Cruz de la Palma, donde contrajo matrimonio con Doña Clara de Liaño y Monteverde, fue Teniente de Capitán General de la Artillería Española, Regidor Perpetuo de la ciudad de La Palma y Teniente de Gobernador en esta isla. Tuvieron cuatro hijos, siendo el sucesor Don Juan V. de Ontanilla Liaño y Monteverde, nacido en Santa Cruz de la Palma y bautizado el día 31 de enero de 1618.
