Encontramos noticias muy contradictorias respecto del origen y primitivo solar de este apellido. Miguel de Salazar dice que procede de Asturias, donde tuvo casa solar, llamada Cejola de B. de los Llanos, y que sus ramas pasaron a Castilla, Aragón y Extemadura. Mosén Jaime Febrer habla de sus Trovas de un Lope Vaillo, llamado de Calderón, y manifiesta que "era de Argamecert, buen lugar de Galicia, fundado sobre una peña", de donde marchó a servir al rey don Jaime I de Aragón en la conquista de Valencia. Añade que dicho monarca le premió sus servicios dándole el pueblo de Benirredra, perteneciente hoy al partido judicial de Gandía, y el de Benisuley, que deve ser hoy el llamado Benisili, del partido judicial de Pego (Alicante). También le heredó en Onteniente (Valencia), según manifiesta. Otros autores estiman que el apellido B. es castellano y que procede del lugar de B. (cuyo nombre tomó), del partido judicial de Astorga (León). Una familia de este linaje tuvo casa muy principal en la villa de Campo de Criptana (Ciudad Real), y de ella fué Gregorio B., natural de Campo de Criptana, Familiar de la Santa Inquisición de Toledo y primer Conde de las Cabezuelas.
