From Syracuse, where it was considered among the patrician families, it was transplanted to Messina in the 17th century and there, by alliance contracted with the Corvaja and Ansalone houses, it succeeded in the ducal title of Montagnareale, as well as in the noble one of Sorrentino. The title of Duke of Montagnareale comes from Ascanio Ansalone in 1642.
