Antica ed illustre famiglia friulana, conosciuta come Zannier e Zanier, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Un ramo agli albori del XIX secolo spostò la propria residenza in Rovigno. Leggenda narra che questo cognome derivi dall'isola greca di Zante, presunta origine della famiglia. In realtà esso è frutto di un patronimico, derivando dal friulano "Zuan", diminutivo di Giovanni. Incontriamo una variante che si avvicina al cognome Zannier a Cividale, nel 1374: «Johanni dicto Zener». Essa prova sia la derivazione diretta di Zener dal nome latino Johannes, sia l’affermazione di questa forma sin dal Trecento. Questa ipotesi è confortata anche dai dati secenteschi del libro dei morti di Socchieve: il parroco che registra la morte di tre membri della stessa famiglia scrive la prima volta Zenar, poi Zuanir, poi Zanir, quasi ad aiutarci a comprendere la genesi di questo cognome.
