Auriga is almost unique, Aurighi, extremely rare, would appear to be from the Lombard-Slovenian area, Aurigi would seem to be specific to the Sienese, Monteroni d'Arbia and Siena, for these surnames we can hypothesize two possible etymological origins, the first by nicknames based on the Latin word auriga (chariot driver, from war, race or parade), the second from the medieval name Aurigus, of which we have an example with the painter magister Aurigus Gallus, or from the Germanic name Auricus, of which we have an example in a Cartula vendicione of the 1084 in Crema in the Cremona area, which concludes: "... Ego Auricus notarius sacri palacii scripsi, postradita cumplevi et dedi.".
