Abba is a surname present in Piedmont, where an original nucleus seems to exist in the Cuneo area, in Liguria and in Lombardy, there is also a strain in Sardinia, but the origin should be Piedmontese, it should derive from a pre-Renaissance term abbas, abbatis (abbot, sir), we must consider that the Ligurian, Piedmontese area suffered in the past the influence of the French world, which attributed to the word the meaning of lord, exponent of a community, or monsignor, understood as a precursor of the French word modern monsieur (sir). additions provided by Giuseppe Concas ABBA: Water, from the Latin aqua. Abba comes from Logudorese. In the "carte cagliaritane" there is akwa, but in "those arborensis" always abba. It comes from the Latin aqua. Surname present in Sardinia only in 2 Municipalities: Sassari (9) and Alghero (3), while we find it in 69 other Municipalities of the continent. It is not a surname originating from Sardinia, where instead it is common as a toponym: abbas in Logudoro, acuas or aquas in Campidano. Abba, as a surname does not derive from the Latin term aqua, but from the late Latin word abba, in turn deriving from the Aramaic abĂ = father, in today's usual use of dad. In the ancient documents of the Sardinian language, we find Abbas, a village, now destroyed, also called Villa d'Abbas - Contrate Montis Regalis (Monreale Castle), located near Sardara and where today stands the Sanctuary of Santa Maria Aquas, famous for its thermal waters, better known during the Roman domination as Aquae Neapolitanae. In the ancient maps another Abbas village is named - Contrate Partis de Guilcier, today's Abbasanta, the ancient Roman station, known as Medias Aquas.
