Etymological origin of Italian surname: Aliffi

Aliffi is typically Sicilian from Syracuse and Syracuse and Catania, it could derive from an apheretic form of the Arabic name Khalifa derived in turn from the homonymous term (in Italian the caliph) (see CALIFANI); there may also be a connection with the Arabic term alif, corresponding to the Greek alpha, it is the first letter of the Arabic alphabet.
