Buccoliero is widespread in Salento, Bucoliero is almost unique, both Sicilians the other two, Bucoli is practically unique, Bucolo is typical of eastern Sicily, Catania, Calatabiano and Misterbianco in Catania and Falcone, Messina, Mazzarrà Sant 'Andrea Giardini Naxos, San Filippo del Mela and Furnari in the Messina area, should all derive, directly or through Norman Frenchisms, from nicknames originated from the Greek term bukòlos (shepherd, guardian of grazing animals), probably to define the ancestor's profession.
