ETTORE | ETTORI | ETTORRE | ETTORRI

Ettore, extremely rare, seems to be southern, Ettori has a stock in the Brescia area, especially in Villa Carcina and Concesio, in Milan and in Mantua and one in Rome, Ettorre has an Abruzzese stock, especially in the Teramo and Aquila areas and one between the Taranto, Bari and Matera areas , Ettorri is practically unique. additions provided by Stefano Ferrazzi The origin of these surnames is to be found in the medieval name Ettore (with a variant in Ettorre), the Italianization of the Greek personal Hektor, which, despite its notoriety, actually lends itself to a difficult interpretation ( according to some sources, it would be an ancient Phrygian or Anatolian name, with an unknown meaning: by tradition, however, the personal Hektor was often associated with the verb echein (to have), which, among its many meanings, also presents that of keep, manage, govern and, in the broadest sense, take care, protect; from here, then, the name Ettore is often translated as one who governs and cares for people and power (clearly, it is a free and paraphrased translation, which does not exclude other interpretations). Having said this, however, a last observation must be added, which concerns above all the surnames Ettore and Ettorre (see also D'Ettore): in some southern areas (for example, in Puglia and in Basilicata), it is possible that, sometimes, these surnames have an Albanian or, alternatively, Greek-Albanian origin, although the onomastic source remains the same (it is the distribution of the surname Ettorre in the Tarantino which, more than anything else, suggests an arbëreshë or Greek origin -Albanian). In conclusion, therefore, these are the surnames of the personal names of the founders.
