Fasiello is specific to the Salento, Vernole, Lecce, Melendugno and Surbo in the Lecce area and Torchiarolo in the Brindisi area. It should derive from a hypocoristic form of the medieval Latin name Fasius, an apheretic form of the name Bonifasius, according to another, much less likely, hypothesis could instead be a nickname given to indicate an origin of the progenitor from the Moroccan city of Faas (Fez).
