FERGNANI | FERNIANI

Fergnani would seem to be specific to Ferrara and Vigarano Mainarda in the Ferrara area. Ferniani, very rare, is specific to Faenza (RA), could derive from the Latin ethnic fernianus (inhabitant of the Fernia), perhaps for having participated in the Britannia campaign, the Fernia Circaria was in Scotland, it is also possible a derivation from the name of the area of Frignano, which took its name from the Ligurian tribe of Friniati (see FRIGNATI) who occupied the lands of the Modena Apennines in prehistoric times, but one cannot exclude a possible derivation from names of localities characterized by the presence of a wood of farnie (type of oak), trace of the Ferniani Counts in Faenza are already found in 1500.
