GADDARI

Gaddari is a specific surname of Nuoro in Sardinia, it should be a contracted form of the ancient Sardinian word cavaddari or cabaddari (knight), the surname should derive from having been the forefather a Byzantine knight, up to the 10th century Sardinia it remained under the Byzantine domination not undergoing, as happened in continental Italy, the occupation of the various barbarian peoples who succeeded us in our country after the fall of the western Roman empire, the Byzantine government in Sardinia organized around the VIIIth century of the limitanei (border troops), both soldiers and peasants, who had been entrusted with a small area of their own near border areas, with permission to cultivate it and with the task of defending the border itself in arms; the Supramonte was one of the territories where many of these limits were concentrated.
