LANZAFAME | LANZAFAMI

Lanzafame is a decidedly Sicilian surname, widespread in Catania, but also very present in Messina, in Mazzarino, Gela and Caltanissetta in Nisseno and Trecastagni, Gravina di Catania, Biancavilla, Aci Sant'Antonio, Aci Catena, Mascalucia, Tremestieri Etmeo, Acireale and San Gregorio di Catania, Lanzafami, almost unique, is probably due to errors in transcription of the previous surname in Piedmontese registry offices, the etymological origin could be connected according to Caracausi to a nickname originated from the dialectal term lanzafami (fannullone), according to the Rohlfs instead derives from a name composed of the words Lanza (spear) and Fame.
