MONTESANO

Typical of Basilicata and Salerno, it probably also has a stock in the Neapolitan dialect, deriving from a dialectal term indicating the mountain origin, in some cases it may derive from toponyms such as Montesano Salentino (LE) or Montesano sulla Marcellana (SA). Already in the 1400s some inhabitants of the Salerno fiefdom of Montesano, already owned by the Aragona family and then of the Sanseverino and the Caracciolos, carried this name; we find traces of this surname in Basilicata, in Venosa (PZ) in the second half of the 1700s with the surveyor Vito Montesano, who draws up a state of the assets of the local cathedral.
