MORTELLARO

Mortellaro is decidedly Sicilian, of Santo Stefano Quisquina and Bivona in the Agrigento, of Syracuse, Noto, Solarino and Francofonte in the Syracuse area, of Palermo and of Niscemi in the nisseno, should derive from a nickname based on the Latin term mortellarius (collector of myrtle), probably motivated by the fact that this was the activity of the founders, we remember that in ancient times the myrtle, consecrated to Venus, was widely used to aromatize and preserve food and wine.
