Very rare, it seems typical of the Agrigento area, with a secondary lineage in the Palermo area, it should derive from the apheresis of the Latin cognomen Januaria (januara), but it is also possible that it derives from the name of a Sicilian town like Santa Maria della Nuara. We find traces of this surname in the 1400s in the Catania area with the famous Sicilian engraver Antonio La Nuara. additions provided by Giovanni Vezzelli Nuara appears in western Sicily and means 'vegetable garden'. Its derivation from the Arabic 'nuwar' is debatable. (Pellegrini I, 269).
