PANE | PANELLA | PANELLI | PANELLO | PANI | PANINI | PANINO

Bread has an important nucleus in the Neapolitan dialect, and in the Catanzaro and Sicily strains, Panelli seems to have a stock in the Brescia area and one in the Lucca area, Panello, absolutely rare, from the Genoese and La Spezia areas, Pani is typical of southern Sardinia, Panini is typical of Modena, of the Modena area of Formigine, Sassuolo, Nonantola and Maranello and of the Reggio area, of Correggio and Reggio Emilia, Panino, almost unique, it would seem Piedmontese, should all derive, directly or through hypocorisms, from the late medieval name Pane, Panis and Panellus or from nicknames originated from the good character of the progenitor; traces of this name are given, for example, in a deed of sale drawn up in Brescia in 1172, where such a Panello Ferrari is found as witness: "... Signa manuum Berardi de Madio and Vuithoni de Porta et Panelli et Stefani et Gambari Ferarii et Teutaldi Bosi testium .... ".
