Paonessa has a small stock in Naples and Carinola in the Caserta area, the main nucleus is in the province of Catanzaro in Gimigliano and Catanzaro, with stocks also in Curinga, Pentone, Fossato Serralta, Lamezia Terme and Tiriolo, it could be matronymics originated from toponyms like Montepaone (CZ), but it is also possible to derive from the medieval name Paonus, Paona (see PAONE).
