PETRETTI | PETRETTO | PETROTTO | PIETRETTI

Petretti has an important stock between Capannori and Lucca, a strain in Montecorvino Pugliano (SA) and one in Viterbo, Petretto is typical of Sassari with a probably secondary lineage between Dolianova and Cagliari, Petrotto, absolutely rare, it would seem Sicilian, Pietretti also extremely rare, it would seem of the Viterbo area, derive from the medieval name Pedrotus or Petretus, of which we have an example in the XIth century, when in a text we can read: "... Paulo inferius Ivellus et Petretus confluentes insulam amnicam moliunter ...", or in Poschiavo in the 15th century, in an act relating to the parish of Brusio, we read: "... Pedrotus et Guarnerius fratres filii quondam Bertrami Petri de Isepo ...", according to some Petretto derives from the name of an ancient locality Ogliastra Petretu del Fara.
