Pisciotta has a nucleus in the Palermo and Trapani areas and a probable lineage in the Matera and Bari areas, Pisciotti, absolutely rare, has a very small stock in the Neapolitan and one in the Cosenza area, Pisciotto, very very rare, has a stock in Agrigento and in Agrigento, have different derivations, from the toponym Pisciotta in the Salerno area to the Campolucan stock, to nicknames linked to the dialect word pisci (fish) with reference to the fisherman's trade, but a derogatory nickname is also possible. additions provided by Giovanni Vezzelli Pisciotta is a surname of western Sicily, but frequent throughout the South and present in the North. It comes from the toponym Pisciotta (SA). There seems to be a reference to the 'Pyxuntum oppidum' mentioned by Strabone, a place that was devastated by the Saracens at the beginning of the tenth century, and whose inhabitants founded the new residential center which they called Pixuntum referring to, with diminutive suffix to their native country. In the 12th century the transcribers cite the town as Pissocta, from which the current name is given. Among the different hypotheses about the remote origin of the toponym, it seems reliable what refers to the Greek voice 'pyxus' and Latin 'buxus', name of a very valuable tree, the boxwood.
