Pizzulli seems to be specific of the Taranto area and of the nearby area of Bari, in particular of Ginosa in the area of Taranto, Pizzulo is specific to Vallesaccarda and Trevico nell'avellinese, Pizzullo has a stock in Vallesaccarda and one in Palermo, all of which should derive from a nickname originated from the dialectal term pizzulu (pinch), probably motivated by the thinness and short stature of the founders, but one cannot overlook the possibility that it derives from a nickname originating from features present in the family's place of residence, where a pizulus or pizulo was probably present scarp leaning against a wall), as we can read in this document of the year 1086: "... not inbeni fundamentum to pars meridie ad faciendum pizulo in eadem casa que ad lavorandum incipi solummodo ipso pariete de ipso pizulo de ipso casile ... et dimitteret me work ipso proprio eorum pizulo iusta eodem pizulo apart mea et super eodem trave ponere ... ".
