Originating in the Provencal Neapolitan, typical of the Provencal island of Elba with a strain also in Emilia, they derive from the ethnic Provençal indicative of Provence. In 1400 in Bologna among the notables is a Bertus provenalis, in 1500 is Archbishop of Sorrento Monsignor Gerolamo Provençal.
