Vellani is typical of the area that includes the Reggiano and especially the Modenese, Vellano, much rarer, is typical of the Alexandrian and Turin, should derive from the name Celta Vellanus, the equivalent of Mars for the ancient Romans, the name of the god of Latin War. Additions provided by Giovanni Vezzelli II surname Vellani, well represented in Modena and Carpi, is easily traced back to the local name Avella (AV), i.e. (A) Vellani, with Afèresi, to indicate the oriundi of that centre. But equally possible is the origin from the locality of Vellano, Fraz. of Pescia (PT). It should not be excluded that some other Vellani are only the surname Villani, by the medieval staff Villanus (see Villani) for incorrect transcription. Even for Vellani only the particular history of every single family of this name, corroborated by adequate documentation, will be able to tell the truth about meaning. F. Violi, surname in Modena and Modenese, 1996.
