AQUILA | D'AQUILA | DELL'AQUILA

Aquila is a widespread surname of leopard in the whole south, D'Aquila has a stock in the Campobasso area, one in the Cosenza area and one in the Syracuse area, between Catania and Ragusa and in Palermo, Dell'Aquila is widespread in Rome, in the Neapolitan and Caserta, in all of Puglia, in particular in the Bari area, present in Lucania and with a stock in the Catania area, they could derive from a nickname or even from the homonymous Abruzzese toponym, but the most probable thing is that they derive from the medieval name Aquila, of which we have mention for example in the Acts of the Apostles: "... Here he found a Jew called Aquila, native of Ponto, arrived shortly before from Italy with his wife Priscilla, following the order of Claudius who removed from Rome all the Jews ... ", and that the cases in D 'and Dell' are patronymic forms referred to headmen whose fathers were called Aquila, or at most they came from the city of L'Aquila, as can be seen for example from this writing of 1460 to Sulmona: "Hanc Bibl iam ego Nicolaus ser Pauli de Raynaldis de Sulmona donavi conventui Sancti Nicolai de Sulmona quam hold debeant fratres in loco dicto ad usum fratrum dicti conventus et eam consignaves in manibus fratris Leonis de Aquila tunc guardiani dicti conventus, octobris 1460, et eam nunc tenet pro usu his ... ", we find traces of these surnames in the 1300s with the Lord of Anagni Giacomo Caetani (or Gaetani) of L'Aquila (1338 ca. - 1423).
