Baiocchi is widespread in Lombardy, Emilia and central Italy, Baiocco is typical of the central belt which includes Marche, Umbria, Lazio and Abruzzo, Baiocchini, Baiocchino, Bajocchi and Bajocco, which are absolutely rare and seem to have the same origin in central Italy, should derive from a nickname half bajocco equivalent to the modern half cartridge, or to highlight a small body or short stature or intending someone of little account anyway. We find traces of these surnames in the Lodi area in a Manifestatio feudi of the second half of the 1100s: "... que iacet ad Mayragum; et terram quam tenet Garardus Baiocco; videlicet de Basiascho et de Mayrago et de Cagamosto et de Baiocco et de Algisio Sancti Viti ... ".
