Bellentani seems to be specific to Modena, Modena, Carpi and Formigine, Bellintani is typical of Mantua, San Benedetto Po and Mantua, they should derive from the medieval name Bellentanus of which we have an example in a Carta commutacionis of the year 1144 in Chieve (CR) : "... inter Iohannem et Petrum seu Maifredum germanos, filios quondam Uberti, seu Imildam, iugalem suprascripti Iohannis, consenciente ipso Iohanne eidem uxori sua et subter confirmante iuxta legem un cum noticia Lanfranci et Bellentani, fratrum eius, in quorum presencia et testium certam fecit promisscionem et manifestacionem quod nullam se pati dixit violenciam ... ". additions provided by Giovanni Vezzelli Bellentani: in a Modenese paper of 1108 we find the personal name Belentius registered; in another of 1158 appears an "Umberto fìlius quondam Belenzano de loco Valle". The surname Bellentani, attested in Modenese for several centuries, or is a corrupt form of Belenzano (* Belentanus, who had to live beside Belentius and Belenzanus.
