BLANC | BLANCA | BLANCHET | BLANCHETTI | BLANCHI | BLANCHINI | BLANCO | BLANCONE | BLANCUZZI

Blanc is specific to the Val d'Aosta and Turin areas, Blanca is typical of the Messina and Catamese areas, Blanchet, absolutely rare, is typical of the Val d'Aosta, Blanchetti has a stock in Niardo in the Brescia area and one in Lodi, Blanchi has a stock in Turin and one between Roman and Rieti, Blanchini, extremely rare, is from Udine, Blanco has a large Sicilian lineage in the area that includes the nisseno, the Catanese, the Ragusa and the Syracusan, has a small stock in the Neapolitan and Avellino area and one in the Lecce area, Blancone, very very rare, is from Salerno and Blancuzzi, extremely rare, is from Udine. additions provided by Stefano Ferrazzi The origin of these surnames is to be found in the medieval name Blanco, which, in archaic onomastics, consists of a variant of the more common Bianco (see Bianca): it should be noted, in fact, that the adjective white comes from an adaptation of the Latin bass blancus (from the ancient high German blanch) and only later the consonant - l - has given way to the vowel - in the initial syllable (according to a principle highly found in the Latin - modern Italian transposition) . It is also true, however, that this explanation does not exclude a partial Spanish origin for the surname Blanco (it is probably a Jewish-Sephardic lineage), while in the case of Blanc it is necessary to think mostly of a French influence, at least for what concerns the Valdostan and Piedmontese stocks. Before concluding, however, a last hypothesis must be added concerning these surnames (although, probably, it is a secondary source): in some cases it is possible that Blanco and its variants arise from a corruption of the medieval name Branca, if we consider the phenomenon of rotacism (see Blancato); this hypothesis, in fact, is supported by the same geographical distribution of the surname Blanca, mainly found in the province of Messina (in an area very similar to that of the Messina branch of the Branca families). As far as the surnames in question are concerned, therefore, it is a question of the surnames of personal names of the founders, even if, in some cases, a derivation from nicknames attributed to them is not excluded (especially in relation to the meaning of white).
