Very common in Lombardy, but also present in the rest of the Italian territory, a strain perhaps in the Piacenza area on the borders with Lombardy and in the Genoese. It should have originated from nicknames deriving from having been the progenitor or gonfaloniere (flag bearer) or belonging to a gonfaloniere family. Gonfaloniere was also a citizen magistrate, so it is not excluded that whoever bears this surname has had one for his ancestor. Traces of the noble Confalonieri family of Piacenza can be found as early as the 11th century when Lantelmo Confalonieri participated in the first crusade as a standard for the Piacenza fighters in the Holy Land. In the municipality of Carpaneto Piacentino (PC) there is a castle called Torre Confalonieri, owned by the Confalonieri since 1200. In a deed of sale dated 1392 written by the notary Pietro Taccola, we read that a certain Cristoforo Confalonieri sells half of the old castle of Celleri , now in ruins, to Marsilio Confalonieri. In 1520 Gian Luigi Confalonieri had an oratory dedicated to San Corrado built in one of the four towers of the castle. In the register of benefactors of the Hospital of Piacenza, we read that Confalonieri Girolamo, with the deed of the notary Luca Porro of 25 November 1549, left part of the "Ponte Tidone" fund to the hospital for a total of 750 perches.
