FOLLA | FOLLO | FULLA

Folla seems to have at least three nuclei, in the lower Friuli, on the border with the province of Gorizia, one in the upper Ferrara near the border with the Rovigoto and one in the Neapolitan, Follo has a stock in Avellino and Benevento and one in Piedmont, Fulla absolutely rare is typical of the Udine area, the hypothesis that derives from the Celtic name Fola is perhaps sustainable for the Ferrarese lineage, more difficult can be extended to the Udine and Neapolitan ones which could instead favor a derivation from the Norman name Follan; the most probable thing is the derivation from the medieval name Follus of which we have for example traces in Bergamo in the early 1500s with Giacomo Follus Bolis, causidico (legal advocate) of Bergamo, or even a derivation from the late Latin verb fullare (follare) and would be to indicate a connection with a site used for fulling (fulla) as we read for example in this parchment of 1570: "... ad brolos seu ad fulla ..." (where fulla identifies a fulling station) -.
