Puligheddu has a large strain in Oliena in Nuoro and one, probably secondary, in Cagliari, could derive from nicknames originated from the Sardinian word Pulega Archaic (coot). Additions provided by Giuseppe Concas Puligheddu: It derives from Puliga (see the surname PULEGA), then from the Latin fulica (coot), but to the diminutive, "Fuliculus". As for Puliga we said that the passage from "F" to "P" is probably due to the fact that in Sardinian the Coot is also called "Pudda de mari" = Sea hen. Puligheddu or Pulighedda or Pulighina or Pulikina is, however, in Sardinian water-hen, which resembles the coot, but smaller size. The surname Puligheddu is also documented in medieval writings, albeit in its variants. In the Condaghe of San Michele di Salvennor, CSMS, XI, XIII century, in paragraph 261 we find, Pulikella Susanna (en domos nouas): Yo el Abat Placidu que pongo en este book (Ego abate Placido ke ponio in ecustu contake = i abate Placido register in this Condaghe...): This is of a donation: God (gift) to San Miguel Georgia de Tori por su alma on part de la Casa de Domos nouas... (continued)... Cotejamos (we Compare) tres quartos de Susanna
