Search Etymological origin of Italian surnames

ROMEO

Very widespread, it presents a very important nucleus in Sicily and Calabria, a strain in Campania and others around Italy, derives from the medieval Byzantine name Romeo (the Byzantines called themselves. Romioi, that is Romans and their traces in Sicily and Calabria are numerous, also through surnames such as Romeo). Assumptions provided by A. Mazzuca may derive from "Romam eo", that is the complement of motorcycles to place (they were pilgrims who went to Rome), or from "(ex) Rome EO" which is the complement of motorbike from place (these were knights, nobles from Rome departed for the Crusades).
