Camillo Paolo Filippo Giulio Benso, count of Cavour, Isolabella and Leri, was born in Turin on 10 August 1810, in a family of the ancient Piedmontese nobility, of Savoy origin. His family descended from the Benso family, who arrived in Italy following Federico Barbarossa and bankers active in the Middle Ages, in Chieri. The main genealogical line of the family became extinct in the eighteenth century, but, in the previous century, the branch from which Camillo was born, had purchased the marquisate of the town of Cavour, thus giving birth to the noble line, universally known.
