Exact documented information, we have about the dawn of 1200, when Girolamo Caprini in 1230 distinguished himself in the defense of the castle of Petrignano, against the count of Antwerp. In 1320 Salvatore Caprini was a Ghibelline captain and, in 1387, Girolamo had to flee Viterbo, having sided with the Vico, lords of that city; taking refuge in Montalto di Castro gave rise to the Caprini-Montalto. From the main branch, remained in Viterbo, eminent personalities emerged such as Giovanni Antonio, whom the historian Feliciano Bussi calls "Dottore insigne" who flourished around 1410, who lived at the Court of Pope John XXIII, obtaining from them the investiture of the county of Petrignano (July 15, 1414, Vatican Secret Archives, lib.
