The origin of this cognomination, to say the least of illustrious genealogists, would derive from the abundance of chestnut trees in the places primarily inhabited by the ancestors of this lineage (Ceres and Voragno), as well as from the trade that they exercised of this food, once fundamental. The first vestiges left by the family refer to the tenth third century. In some of the parchments in the province of Lecco, in fact, the name of a certain Perona, daughter of Giovanni Castagneri, is found, who, in 1310-11, buys goods for the value of 60 Viennese money, from a certain Bernardo Truffo.
