The Mazzeos are the family of an ancient and noble Messinian slave, bearing the title of “Baron of San Teodoro”. As for the origin of the surname, the most learned genealogists argue that it may derive from phonetic alterations of the Latin 'Mattheus', although a connection with some homonymous toponyms, such as 'Mazzeo (ME) 'or 'San Mazzeo (CZ)', cannot be ruled out. Over the centuries, the family has given birth to men of the highest virtue and distinguished merits, as attested by notarial deeds and documents. Among them are: - “Girolamo”, who held the position of “senator in Messina” in the years “1606-1607"; - “Giovanni”, who was “senator” in “1691-1692" and “proconservative” in “Massa di San Giorgio” in “1695"; - “Francesco”, already mentioned, “consul of the Sea in Messina” in the years “1704-1705"; - “Giovanni”, doctor in “utroque jure”, living in “Messina in 1732";”, from Messina, doctor in 'Sacred Theology', certified in the year '1785'.
