The origin of this surname is to be found in the personal "Nadal", with the addition of the diminutive suffix "-ut". This derivation has led some scholars to hypothesize a descent from the noble Nadal family of Oderzo, which then passed to Venice and included there among the patricians at the lockout of the Maggior Consiglio in 1297. A part of it also passed into Candia. Lacking sufficient genealogical evidence, however, we cannot confirm this lineage. In any case, the first attestations of the surname are already in the tenth sixth century when members of this family are found in deeds and documents, often as landowners.
