Very ancient and noble dynasty originally from Genoa. In the Middle Ages, the noblest and wealthiest Genoese citizens organized themselves into consortia of families who lived in the same districts and who had common interests. These consortia were called Companions. The chiefs, called consuls and vice-consuls, had the mandate to govern, command the companies, judge on the disputes of the members; in short, they simultaneously had administrative, military and judicial functions. The Companion of Piazzalunga, originally Piazza Longa, included the towns of San Bernardo, San Donato and the Giustiniani district.
