Originally from Semifonte, this ancient and illustrious house was brought to Florence by a Pietro, from Berto, known as the Velluti, who had a wealth of wool trafficking there. Buonaccorso, his son, intervened at the battle of Montaperti in 1260, and upon his death in 1296 he left his home to be one of the richest in Italy. Lippo, from Buonaccorso, was the first prior of his house, which from 1283 to 1519 achieved this dignity 29 times, and for four the supreme one of the gonfalonierato of justice. Piero, from Gherardino, was governor of Arezzo in 1337, then was sent orator to Lucca in 1342; Donato, of Michele, in 1380 was sent to Naples to rejoice with the King of the conquest of that kingdom; Tommaso, from Piero, went to Tunis to begin commercial negotiations with the sovereign with the Florentines.
