According to what has been handed down, the family is of Italian origin and, more specifically, Genoese. The family moved to Canary Islands with a Don Santos Zerolo, born in Genoa in 1817. He was the son of Don Tomás Zerolo and of Mrs Isabel Libori. Don Santos Zerolo got married in Arrecife (Lanzarote), where he settled, with Madame Micaela Herrera Martín, on June 20, 1843. From this marriage were born: 1) Don Elias Dionisio Z. y Herrera, on April 6, 1848, who married Madam Armenia Castro and Febles in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 1879.
