Família genovesa muito antiga, de virtude clara e ancestral, da atual Suíça italiana, que se mudou para Rapallo e, a partir do século XV, para Gênova, onde, pelo imperador Carlos V, tinha o título de marquês. Desde a época de Bartolomeo d'Antonio, que é de 1370 até a decadência da república, essa família participou do governo do estado. Oito de seus membros eram procuradores, doze senadores e um, Matteo, sentado no trono dos doges. Ele também deu à igreja dois cardeais e um arcebispo. Os Franzoni também são contados entre as famílias nobres em 1528 e são agregados a dois dos 28 nobres hotéis estabelecidos pela Reforma de Andrea Doria, a saber, a da família Spinola e a do Interiano.
