It is not known exactly when the very first Bolton arrived in North America, but a number of people bearing this name settled in the colonies in the 17th century, among them: John Bolton, who in the year 1652 sailed to Virginia on a ship named the "Bonaventure"; we know nothing further about this individual. In 1718, a Robert Bolton emigrated from England to the colonies; he was the son of John and Ann Bolton, of Lancashire and Yorkshire, respectively.
